GIULIO PAOLINI Genoa, 1940 "Untitled" from “Six Illustrations for Johann J. Winckelmann’s Writings on Ancient Art” 50x70, a print and a collage on print—front and back within the same frame (not glued together) The work is dedicated to Franco Mello on February 18, 2014, in the lower right corner Approved by the Giulio and Anna Paolini Foundation, Turin This is a unique work, dedicated to Franco Mello, who in 1977 was the publisher of the artist’s book “Six Illustrations for Johann J. Winckelmann’s Writings on Ancient Art,” see entry GPE-0030 in the online catalog raisonné of graphic editions and multiples (direct link to the book’s entry: https://www.fondazionepaolini.it/ita/scheda-opera-e/?arc=GPE-0030&searchid=120850258411f&i=0); hence the significance of the dedication. This is a tribute conceived in 2014, recalling the 1977 book in which Paolini and Mello collaborated on its creation. Since it is a hardcover book, Paolini presumably used proofs that he had kept in his studio. The plate featuring the image of the hand does not show the cropped drawing of an ancient head, taken from Winckelmann, but it is nonetheless the print used for the aforementioned book. The plate featuring the ancient sculpture, set against a black background, is the exact same lithograph found in the book, accompanied by a personal dedication to Mello. These are two independent and unique works (although the lithograph with the dedication does not feature any other original modifications).
