MELLO FRANCO AND MAFFEI GIORGIO "Sound of Silence. Art vs. Music. Materials for Art II." 2012 26x23,5 Magazine edited by Giorgio Maffei and Franco Mello; contributions by Germano Celant and Gianluigi Ricuperati; graphic design and art direction by Franco Mello The magazine consists of a selective collection of visual materials devoted to the relationship between figurative art and other media. It does not show paintings or sculptures but is devoted to printed documents-photographs, artist's books, scores, catalogs, documents, ephemera and records-that not only recall the climate and environment of already well-known events in art, but stand in their own right and without any subservience as autonomous artifacts. It manifests a reluctance toward words; indeed, it is not written by art critics, but privileges the image of things, leaving the persuasive capacity of communicating ideas to the things themselves. "Art vs. music": music, queen of the immaterial, finds in the twentieth century the ability to take shape through unusual objects that contend for the stage with visual art. Here only an attempt is made to reveal its overpowering beauty. In 1964 Simon and Garfunkel sang "Sound of Silence," while other silences shook the world of music and art. The magazine contains a vinyl record with a composition by Sylvano Bussotti and a poster with photographs, which serves as an overlay, by Guido Harari dedicated to John Cage, an American composer whose birth centenary falls.
