Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld. A maxi coat in black tweed woven with multicolored threads, 2007, Look 3, with a notched collar, three-quarter-length sleeves, fabric-covered front buttons, flap chest pockets, and a glossy black Chanel waist belt, further detailed with a black patterned silk lining; the exterior is 49% wool, 39% cotton and 12% polyamide, of French size 34. Grade B Notes: Karl Lagerfeld’s Autumn/Winter 2007 ready-to-wear collection placed Chanel’s established tailoring within a playful winter setting. Presented at the Grand Palais against an ice rink, artificial snow and suspended clouds, the show combined the house’s characteristic tweeds with colourful checks, knitwear and references to winter sports. These elements brought a youthful informality to Chanel’s polished wardrobe, proposing new ways to wear its familiar fabrics and silhouettes. The present coat’s elongated silhouette and multicoloured threads give its dark tweed a subtle richness. Notched lapels and flap chest pockets establish a tailored structure, while the glossy black belt defines the waist and introduces a contrasting surface. The balance between textured fabric and reflective accessory lends the coat visual depth, with the belt allowing its generous length to be worn with a more pronounced silhouette. Presented as Look 3 in the collection, styled over jeans and accompanied by a red clutch. This pairing offers a particularly useful illustration of Lagerfeld’s approach: substantial tweed outerwear given an everyday ease through denim, with a vivid accessory enlivening the darker palette. The present lot lends itself to the same interplay between formal tailoring and relaxed dressing.
