Victor Edelstein, London. A Victor Edelstein champagne satin asymmetric cocktail dress, circa 1980s, of short fitted form, extensively pleated and draped diagonally across the bodice and hips, one side extending into a dramatic long cascading satin panel; labelled Victor Edelstein, London. Please note that the Vetement Spa Label and sizing of the lot is missing; please contact the relevant department for further information. Grade C Provenance: An important private collection. Notes: Victor Edelstein was an important contributor to Diana, Princess of Wales’ evening wardrobe during the 1980s and early 1990s. His best-known creation is the midnight-blue velvet gown she wore to the White House in 1985, when she famously danced with John Travolta. Preserved by Historic Royal Palaces, the dress remains a celebrated example of his association with the Princess and the international visibility of British eveningwear. The present champagne satin cocktail dress offers a particularly sculptural expression of Edelstein’s approach to occasion dressing. Extensive diagonal pleating and drapery shape the bodice and hips, creating a succession of light and shadow across the lustrous fabric. Its short, fitted silhouette is dramatically offset by the long cascading panel at one side, introducing movement and an asymmetric flourish. The restrained champagne colour allows the construction to command attention. Decoration emerges from the manipulation of the satin itself, with gathered folds providing texture and the extended panel lending theatrical presence. This balance of a closely defined silhouette and expansive drapery gives the dress its distinctive character, combining the intimacy of cocktail dressing with the visual drama of an evening gown.
