1122 - Chinese export crested and initialed porcelain coffee cup and saucer, Qianlong ca. 1780. With an owl crest and initials W.W. for William Woodley, Governor of the Leeward Islands in 1784. The crest and initials surrounded by flower sprigs within a pink scale-pattern border. Provenance: Heirloom & Howard Ltd., 31 January 2003; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Reference: Howard, "Chinese Armorial Porcelain," Vol. I, pg. 695. Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," pg. 185, no. 213. Lot Essay: This service thought by Chaffer to be for Owles (a local Lowestoft family) thus starting the myth of "Oriental Lowestoft," a misnomer previously applied to Chinese export porcelain wares.
