1048 - Chinese export armorial porcelain plate, Yongzheng ca. 1730. Arms of Izod of six leopards' faces in a diamond lozenge. Surrounded by a well of latticework interspersed with cartouches of flowers and the rim with sprays of blooming peonies. Provenance: Martin-Hurst Collection; Philp Suval Inc., 16 March 1976; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Reference: Williamson, "The Book of Famille Rose," pg. 122, pl. XXXVIII. Gordon, "Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain," pg. 31, pl. 9. Howard, "Chinese Armorial Porcelain," Vol. I, pg. 237. Lot Essay: Williamson counts this among the rarest and artistically finest of armorial export services. Gordon also notes that this set, generally considered one of the most beautiful made, was likely made for an unmarried daughter of Henry Izod. Howard disagrees, asserting that it was likely made for the son of Elizabeth Izod and Lorenzo Nickson, who changed his name to Izod and inherited Chapel Izod. Elizabeth was the only daughter of a Kevan Izod and heir to the Izod estate of her uncle, William Izod. Both families lived in Counties Cork and Kilkenny. Diameter: 8 3/4 in.
