Chinese export Dutch armorial porcelain plate, Yongzheng ca. 1725-30. The center with the arms of de Jonge (or de Jongh). Surrounded in underglaze blue with borders of flower chains, the rim with four sprays of flowers and precious objects. The underside with butterflies after a design by Cornelis Pronk. Provenance: Philip Suval Inc., 12 June 1987; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Lot Essay: This service made for Cornelis de Yonge of Middelburg, sone of Pieter de Jonge and Johanna Stevense. His godmother was Henriette Chastelein, who bore similar arms, which has led to some confusion between the attribution of this set to the correct family in the past. Cornelis was a VOC official in Bengal who eventually rose to senior merchant and first administrator in 1732. He was appointed director of Bengal in August 1743 succeeding Jan Albert Sichterman, who had an armorial service with a border identical to the present lot. Diameter: 9 1/4 in.
