Unusual Chinese export armorial porcelain marriage plate, Qianlong ca. 1750. Decorated with an elaborate cartouche and two cyphers beneath a coronet, possibly Danish. All within a band of glit scrollwork along the rim and a gilt-patterned well. Surrounding the arms is a Chinese shepherdess and a man seated beneath a tree reading. Three angels appear from the clouds above and below a dog seated beside a shepherd's crook. Illustrated in Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," pg. 91, no. 80. Provenance: Amsterdam Antiques Gallery, 11 June 1988; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Lot Essay: This plate contains a number of reference to the popular Valentine's pattern. However, it is unclear if it was designed specially in Europe by someone with knowledge of Anson's earlier service or if it was the adaptation of a supercargo or Chinese artist in Canton. Diameter: 9 1/4 in.
