Chinese export European subject marriage coffee pot and cover, Qianlong ca. 1740. Decorated in famille rose along either side with a gentleman playing the flute and a female companion, both seated in bergeres. All below crowned accollee initials. Provenance: The Chinese Porcelain Company, New York, 25 October 2002; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Lot Essay: Services such as this were likely intended for non-armigerous couples without titles. The scene depicted bears much resemblance to the previous lot whose only difference is that a parrot in a swing replaces the accollee initials. The ciphers in replacement of the parrot likely indicates a personalized adaptation from the general market theme. This became a more widely popularized practice in the second half of the eighteenth century, and this coffee pot is an early example of this customization. Height: 9 in x width: 8 1/2 in x depth: 5 in.
