Chinese export porcelain soup plate, Qianlong ca. 1750. Depicting the famous mythological scene showing the judgement of Paris. The titular character hands Venus a golden apple while Juno, Minerva, Cupid, and a spotted dog observe. All within a gilt and iron-red shell-scroll border. Provenance: Purchased from Elinor Gordon; Christie's, London, "The J. Louis Binder Collection of Chinese Export Art," 17 June 2003, Lot 121; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Reference: Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," pg. 180, no. 205. Lot Essay: This scene is taken from an engraving, possibly after Rubens. Elinor Gordon was well-known as a premier antiques dealer in Chinese export porcelain and for her important book, "Collection Chinese Export Porcelain," often referenced among collectors and sales of Chinese export. This plate, sold from her private collection before the 2010 Sotheby's auction of her porcelain, is a lovely example of the transfer of motifs from Europe to Asia and back. Diameter: 9 in x depth: 1 3/4 in.
