939 - Rare pair of Chinese export European subject porcelain dishes, Qianlong ca. 1755-60. Decorated in underglaze blue with a scene of six semi-naked figures on a riverbank. Within a cell-pattern border along the rim. Provenance: Christie's, Amsterdam, "Chinese and Japanese Ceramics, Furniture and Works of Art," 3 June 1992, Lot 260; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Lot Essay: The scene from a detail of a print by Johannes Teyler (Dutch, 1648-ca. 1709) from his "Opus Typochromaticum" depicting the 'Fall of Phaeton.' Phaethon, son of Helios, begged his father to prove his paternity to his friends. Helios swore an oath on the River Styx to grant any wish the youth desired and Phaethon in turn chose to ride the sun chariot, despite his father's warnings that the steeds were too strong for him. Phaethon's lack of control led to disasters when he flew too low and scorched the earth. The scene shown on the plates depicts a group of river gods in distress. The petitioned with Zeus to stop Phaeton's uncontrolled chariot ride as it led to their rivers drying up. Zeus took up a thunderbolt and struck Phaeton, causing him to fall into the river and drown, ending his doomed flight. (Each) diameter: 8 in.
