Chinese export porcelain famille rose plate, Qianlong ca. 1740. Decorated with a Meissen style European subject of a shepherdess seated below a tree caressing a lamb. This scene within a quatrefoil panel surrounded by puce and iron-red leaf scroll. The well with a narrow band of gilt flowering foliage and the border with finely detailed gilt, iron-red, and grisaille fruit and flower sprays. Provenance: The Chinese Porcelain Company; Christie's, London, "The J. Louis Binder Collection of Chinese Export Art," 17 June 2003, Lot 67; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Reference: Howard & Ayers, "China for the West," Vol. II, pg. 523, no. 532. Lot Essay: The central design for this plate may be inspired by an engraving titled "Autumn" by Claude Duflos after a pastel by Rosalbe Carriera. Howard & Ayers suggest that the inspiration may come from a Meissen porcelain painted in Augsburg sent to China for copying. However, the border was added from a piece the Chinese painter was familiar with as they were not provided with clear border instructions. Diameter: 9 in.
