Chinese export ruby back plate, Yongzheng ca. 1735. Painted on white enameled copper with a scene of a European lady and gentlemen on a picnic. The honeycomb border interrupted by insects perched on large bunches of fruit and flowers. The ruby back enclosing a blue dragon roundel. Illustrated in Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," pg. 70-1, no. 50. Provenance: Christie's, London, "Fine Chinese Export Porcelain Enamels, Bronzes, Works of Art and Hardstones," 10 November 1983, Lot 532; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Lot Essay: While European subject plates were often made for export, Howard suggests they were made as much for the educated Chinese buyer as they were for the Western market. These scenes showed idealized Western life in the same way that idealized scenes of Chinese life were popular in Europe. Finely decorated, this plate likely would have been purchased by a private trader as a speculative purchase from a Chinese merchant in Canton. An identical plate recently sold at Bonham's, London, "Roger Keverne Ltd: Moving On Part II," 7 Juen 2021, Lot 686. Diameter: 8 1/2 in.
