Chinese export porcelain plate for the European subject painted in grisaille for the Dutch market, Qianlong ca. 1740. Finely and delicately decorated along the center with a classical marriage scene in a grand architectural setting below an arch inscribed "Semper Amor Pro Te Firmissuimus Atque Fidelis." The columns along either side surmounted by a small coat-of-arms. Neptune and sea-nymphs emerge from reeds to watch the scene. Illustrated in Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," pg. 82, no. 66. Provenance: The Art Exchange, New York; Christie's, New York, "Fine Americana and Chinese Export Porcelain," 5 May 1979, Lot 131; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Reference: Howard & Ayers, "China for the West," pg. 394, no. 391. Lot Essay: A similar plate is illustrated in Howard & Ayers, "China for the West," Volume II, pg. 394, no. 391. It is noted that the scene on that plate and on the present lot likely derived from a European engraving from a 17th century book frontispiece. On various services differing arms are recorded above the columns. Howard & Ayers noted that, at the time of writing the book, at least six different services were known and all of high quality, suggesting they were all executed in a very short period of time. Diameter: 9 in.
