Chinese export famille rose deep plate, Yongzheng ca. 1730-5. Painted with a maiden riding a sacred cow holding a long lotus-spray and riding on a mythical beast, attended by two young ladies. The well with a lime-green diaper pattern and the rim with a puce cell-pattern border interrupted by three cartouches reserving peonies. Illustrated in Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," pg. 69, no. 48 Provenance: Christie's, London, "Fine Chinese Export Porcelain," 30 March 1983, Lot 401; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Lot Essay: Howard suggests that, as there is no tale of a Chinese maiden riding a bull, this may be an early interpretation of the European fable of Europa and the Bull. It was possibly created upon suggestion of a supercargo to a Chinese merchant to have this scene painted in Chinese taste. Diameter: 9 in.
