Pair of rare and unusual Chinese export two-handled footed porcelain bowls, ca. 1770. Each decorated with famille rose floral swags and bunches. Illustrated in Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," pg. 225, no. 265. Provenance: The Art Exchange, Inc., New York, 16 March 1976; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Lot Essay: These "tea tester" bowls are, by repute, from a family claiming that an ancestor in the tea business mixed tea leaves in these bowls at his place of business. Howard notes that they seemed to be designed for pouring and that tea testing was likely not their original use. He pairs them in "Choice of the Private Trader" with a dairy bowl, noting their more practical handles. (Each) height: 4 in x width: 10 in x diameter: 8 1/2 in.
