Pair of Chinese export famille rose wall pockets, ca. 1880. Modeled in mirror form of young boys with one leg raised wearing colorful jackets and trousers and holding vases. With flat backs and a slot for hanging on a wall. Illustrated in Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," p. 260-61, no. 311. Provenance: Christie's, London, "Fine Chinese Export Porcelain," 8 March 1984, Lot 631; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Reference: Sargent, "The Copeland Collection," pg. 122-3, no. 56. Lot Essay: Both equally well decorated in famille rose with flowers on the white glaze, but one coat with famille verte trimming in translucent enamels, and the vases in the style of the early 18th century. It is the mixture of palettes, which would have been unlikely to occur in the 18th century, which suggests that these are well painted 19th c. figures. The use of porcelain figures as wall decoration unsupported by brackets was also much more common in the late 19th century. The quality, however, is excellent, and this applies to much work of the period. Height: 8 1/2 in x width: 3 1/2 in x depth: 2 1/2 in.
