After graduating from Saint-Cyr, he quickly joined the army, becoming a second lieutenant in the Marine Infantry stationed in Indochina in 1895. During this mission, he met the future Marshal Lyautey and shared with him his desire to paint. He then received a shipment of drawing supplies from France, allowing him to sketch and paint the landscapes and people he encountered during his time abroad. Colonel Galand thus became one of the leading figures among the traveling painters of Indochina, celebrated by his peers, notably during a major retrospective organized in 1927 at the Charpentier Gallery. He was not only a painter but also a pastel artist and engraver, and his body of work includes pieces dedicated to Indochina and Morocco. He also participated in the Colonial Exhibition in Marseille in 1922, where his works were displayed in the Indochinese section of the Fine Arts, notably *Fishing Boats in Annam*. His works, primarily landscapes painted on canvas and wood, offer a glimpse into the Far Eastern routes traveled by this soldier, artist, and traveler. Jules Galand was born in Paris in 1869.
