Gerard Pieter Adolfs (1898-1968) Lèlong dancer, signed "Adolfs' (lower left); signed again, dated, numbered and titled ' '48/no 8/Lèlong Bali/Girl danser from/Bali' (on the reverse),oil on canvas, 49x39 cm,Exhibited:-Stockholm, Hultbergs Konsthandel, ‘Adolfs, oljemalningar fran Bali och Java’, 16-30 October 1948, inv. no. 25.Provenance:-Private collection, Sweden.-Private collection, the Netherlands.During his Neo-Impressionist period, extending approximately from 1946 to 1967, Gerard Pieter Adolfs applied paint to the canvas with a palette knife. His artistic approach also grew bolder: figures and faces became increasingly abstracted, while his colours gained in saturation. These changes heightened the impression of tropical light and brought greater dynamism to the scenes he depicted:“These works present a typically Oriental vision where shade and soft tonalities do not exist, where everything dances and whirls, where nature, people and objects are like motley spots of colour fading away into a blazing, all-absorbing light.”(De Gentenaar, 10 January 1950).'Lègong dancer' is characteristic of this distinctly Oriental vision.
