Victorian Pembroke table. England, ca. 1870. Mahogany. Features two folding wings, a drawer at the waist, and legs topped with brass caps and casters. In good overall condition. Measurements when open: 69 x 109 x 105 cm. (open). This piece is a classic example of the Pembroke style, a British-designed table intended to provide a spacious surface while maintaining compact dimensions when the wings are folded down. The model, developed in the late 18th century and continued throughout the 19th century, is characterized precisely by its two hinged side panels and, frequently, by the inclusion of one or more drawers. In this example, the understated mahogany tabletop, with its gently rounded edges, is paired with turned legs featuring pronounced rings and metal casters—common design elements in British domestic furniture of the period. The absence of applied ornamentation highlights the wood grain and the functionality of the folding mechanism, within a Victorian aesthetic still closely linked to designs from the early part of the century. Pembroke-style mahogany tables are preserved in collections such as that of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
