Sewing table. England, 20th century. Mahogany with fruitwood marquetry. With secret drawers. In good condition. Measurements: 67 × 57 × 57 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. An elegant historicist reinterpretation of English furniture, this sewing table combines a structure with a distinctly ornamental presence with carefully designed interior functionality. The circular tabletop, embellished with marquetry, has hallmarks of classical elegance compared with the body, which is paneled and structured by narrow wooden stiles, while the tripod base adds a distinct classical touch. Of particular interest are the carved claw feet and the small tassel motifs at the base, decorative elements that reinforce its traditional character. The inclusion of secret compartments and drawers also reflects the very nature of this type of occasional furniture, designed to combine storage and domestic use in a compact piece.
