JOSEP CUSACHS CUSACHS (Montpellier, 1851 – Barcelona, 1908). "Cavalry Scene." Watercolor on cardboard. Signed in the lower left corner. In good condition. Shows subtle stains consistent with its age. Measurements: 15.5 × 10 cm; 21 × 15.5 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Equestrian and military depictions form the most recognizable core of Josep Cusachs’s body of work; he was noted for the precision and naturalism with which he captured horses, riders, and scenes of military maneuvers. In this small watercolor, a formation of soldiers on horseback advances, led by a rider who occupies the center of the composition. The sharpest definition in the foreground gradually fades toward the background, where figures and mounts are suggested through light washes. The execution combines confident line work with a restrained application of color, reserving blues and reds for the uniforms and a range of earth tones for the horses. This economy of means reinforces the sense of movement and depth, revealing the firsthand knowledge of military life that distinguished much of the artist’s work. Josep Cusachs pursued a military career and rose to the rank of captain in the artillery before leaving the army in 1882 to devote himself fully to painting. He studied under Simó Gómez in Barcelona and Édouard Detaille in Paris, specializing in military and equestrian scenes. In 1891, he won the gold medal at the Berlin Fine Arts Exhibition for *Division Maneuvers* and received major official commissions, including portraits of Alfonso XIII and General Prim. His work is extensively represented at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, which houses pieces such as *Battle of Arlaban*, *On Patrol in the Countryside*, and *Parade in the Countryside Before King Alfonso XIII*.
