NARCISSE OTHON (active 1820–1847). “Portrait of a Young Man,” 1830. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated on the reverse. Measurements: 20 x 17 cm; 28.5 x 25.5 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Narcisse Othon was a painter active between 1820 and 1847, whose known body of work fits within the context of European painting in the first half of the 19th century—a period of significant artistic transformations marked by the transition from Neoclassicism to Romanticism. Although documented biographical information about the artist is scarce, his career coincided with a period of significant development in bourgeois portraiture, a genre that came to play a prominent role as an expression of individual identity, social prestige, and new ideals of elegance and distinction. It is within this context that the present “Portrait of a Young Man,” dated 1830, is situated; it reflects the portraiture sensibility of its time through a naturalistic depiction, a careful characterization of facial features, and warm lighting that accentuates the expressiveness of the face. The compositional restraint and the refinement of the clothing reflect the tastes of a wealthy clientele interested in immortalizing their image through intimate portraits. The work thus constitutes an interesting testament to nineteenth-century portraiture and to the artistic output of Narcisse Othon during the early decades of the nineteenth century.
