STUDY BY A.F. NAPOLEÓN (Barcelona, second half of the 19th century). "Portrait of a Man." Oil on panel. Signed “Napoleon f.” on the right side. On the reverse, a label from the “Gran Galería Fotográfica A.F. Napoleon,” Barcelona. In good overall condition. The frame has cracks and missing pieces. Measurements: 58 × 45 cm; 77 × 67 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. A unique example of the portrait work produced by the renowned Napoleon studio, one of the most prestigious photographic establishments in 19th-century Barcelona. The combined presence of the signature “Napoleon f.” and the commercial label on the reverse allows the piece to be directly linked to the studio, whose new location on Rambla de Santa Mónica eventually included a dedicated painting workshop in addition to its photographic galleries. The subject is depicted in a bust portrait, dressed entirely in black, against an equally dark background that draws attention to the face. The precise rendering of the skin tones, the monocle, and the meticulous depiction of the clothing reflect the representative nature of bourgeois portraiture of the period. The subdued color palette and oval format reinforce the solemnity of an image conceived to capture both the subject’s physical features and social standing. “Napoleón” was the trade name adopted by the Fernández-Tiffon family for one of Barcelona’s most important dynasties of photographers. Founded by Antonio Fernández Soriano and Anaïs Tiffon, the firm achieved particular renown in portraiture and worked for members of the Royal Family, the bourgeoisie, and prominent figures in Catalan culture. Their studio on the Rambla de Santa Mónica dominated Barcelona’s portrait photography scene for decades and also engaged in complementary activities related to painting and artistic retouching.
