RICARDO BRUGADA PANIZO (Barcelona, 1867–1919). “Seascape.” Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. In good overall condition. Measurements: 32.5 × 48 cm; 72 × 86 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. This seascape demonstrates the breadth of Ricardo Brugada’s artistic range; his solid academic training is evident here in a painting that pays particular attention to the effects of light and atmosphere. The composition is organized around the ancient stone structures emerging from the water, set against the open horizon and the small sailboats silhouetted in the distance. The presence of birds and the movement of the sea’s surface lend dynamism to a scene dominated by a cool, luminous palette. The brushwork becomes denser and more impasto on the rocks and buildings, while the sea and sky are rendered with a lighter touch. These hallmarks allow him to combine the solidity of the foreground with the atmospheric depth of the landscape, revealing a conception of nature linked to Spanish turn-of-the-century painting. Ricardo Brugada Panizo was a student of Antonio Caba and completed his artistic training in Barcelona and Rome. He spent a significant part of his career in Andalusia, particularly in Seville, Córdoba, and Cádiz, focusing on portraiture, landscape, and genre scenes. He participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions, presenting, among other works, *¡Despedida!* in 1901 and *Murmuración* in 1904. He also served as a professor of Artistic Drawing at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, a position documented in the institution’s official yearbooks. The National Museum of Fine Arts in Cuba houses his *Girl with a Red Mask*, dated 1890.
