LANCELOT LYTTLETON GOLDIE (Great Britain, 1872–?). “Seascape.” Watercolor on paper mounted on cardboard. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 28 x 37 cm. Provenance: Family bequest of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. An art and heritage collection originating from the legacy of the Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a key figure in 19th-century Catalan realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched over successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original estates of both artists, along with new acquisitions made by their descendants. They remained particularly dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the family legacy, acquiring works by the painters themselves as they came onto the market and gradually expanding the collection with paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other objects of artistic and historical interest. In this painting, the artist offers us a sweeping panorama of the sea, whose waves crash against the shore—a shore of which we have almost no record. At the same time, a series of rocks rise from the middle of the water, causing the sea to rage and crash against them, creating fierce waves. The artist works with loose, dynamic brushstrokes in a very wide range of green and earth tones. In the background, the scene ends at a sharp horizon that separates the sea from the open sky, whose clouds form sinuous shapes.
