70 - English School, 19th century.

English School, 19th century. Seaside landscape. Oil on canvas. Measurements: 26 x 56 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. A sweeping coastal panorama takes center stage in this painting. The calm waters of the sea roll in as gentle waves onto the sand and lap against the rocks of a small headland. In the background, a few sailboats can be seen, adding a human touch to the scene while simultaneously accentuating the serenity of the view. The artist has chosen a low horizon line, leaving ample space for the sky, where gray and white clouds appear to recede before the advance of an orange streak suggesting the rising sun. A delicate silvery light thus bathes the entire scene.
