19th-century Spanish school. “Landscape with Figures.” Oil on canvas. The frame shows signs of wear. Measurements: 43 x 33 cm; 58 x 48 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. This work is part of the 19th-century Spanish landscape movement, a genre that underwent a profound renewal throughout the century, evolving from idealized compositions with Romantic roots toward an increasingly direct and naturalistic observation of the environment. The work thus embodies the sensibility that led to realist landscape painting, which developed with particular intensity in Spain during the second half of the 19th century, when the depiction of nature gradually ceased to be viewed as a mere backdrop and instead became an autonomous genre and a privileged field for direct observation.
