19th–20th-century Italian school. “Venetian View.” Oil on tinplate. Measurements: 20 x 34 cm; 27 x 40.5 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Conceived as a Venetian veduta, this work captures the allure that Venice exerted on Italian and European painters between the 19th and 20th centuries. The composition is dominated by the monumental architecture of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, recognizable by its distinctive dome and its prime location facing the lagoon. The vast expanse of the sky and the prominence of the lagoon reinforce the depth of the composition, which draws on the great tradition of the Venetian veduta, here revitalized through a more luminous and picturesque sensibility characteristic of the turn of the century.
