JAMES CALLOWHILL (Worcester, 1838 – Boston, 1917). “Munnery Wood, Worcestershire,” 1884. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Titled, located, and inscribed on the reverse: “Munnery Wood / Worcestershire / Jas Callowhill / Worcester.” In good overall condition. Measurements: 51 × 76 cm; 58 × 83.5 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Painted in 1884, still during James Callowhill’s English period, this work is a fine example of his skill as a landscape painter. The composition is built through a succession of planes that lead from the stream in the foreground to the mountains on the horizon, combining a sense of spatial breadth with a meticulous observation of the vegetation and atmospheric changes. Light takes center stage as it sweeps across the clouds and hillsides, while the palette of ochres, greens, and autumnal hues lends warmth to the landscape. The two small figures by the river introduce a sense of scale and a subtle narrative element. The naturalistic treatment, combined with a detailed yet light-sensitive style, places the painting within the British landscape tradition of the second half of the 19th century. James Callowhill was born in Worcester and trained at the Worcester School of Art. Beginning in 1853, he worked as an artist and decorator for the Worcester Royal Porcelain Works before moving to the United States in the late 1880s, where he continued his career as a painter, illustrator, and porcelain decorator. His work is represented in institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which holds works from his American period and highlights his importance as a decorator for Royal Worcester.
