WERTHEIMER (Palmyre) (1832–1917). French opera singer, contralto. Autograph letter signed “P. Mme Wertheimer” to an unidentified correspondent. Antwerp, January 22, 1858. 2 pages, in-12 format. An interesting letter in which the singer thanks her correspondent for the compliments he offered her following a performance, while modestly mentioning her fatigue and the difficulties she faced during her performance. “On Monday evening, when you did me the honor of serenading me, I was so exhausted that, despite all my efforts, I was unable to come down; I could only applaud you from afar; I regretted this all the more, as I would have liked to tell you in person just how touched I was by this flattering gesture... ” She goes on to ask her correspondent to convey her compliments to the members of his society for their performance: “I would like to ask you, Sir, to accept—and to convey to the members of your society—my compliments for their truly remarkable performance, along with my warmest thanks. ” She concludes by expressing her hope to meet him in person in Paris. A charming expression of gratitude from an opera singer to the members of an Antwerp musical society in the mid-19th century. Letter on laid paper, written in brown ink, with signature and date. Handwritten address at the bottom of the last page: “25 rue Lamartine in Paris.” A few foxing spots and traces of old creases, slight marginal wear. In good condition.
