VERLET (Alice) (1873–1930). Belgian opera singer, coloratura soprano, one of the great opera performers of the Belle Époque. Autograph letter signed “A. Verlet,” addressed to Mr. Laz… [name to be deciphered]. No place, no date. 1 page, in-8 format, in violet ink, on paper with gold-stamped watermark. A beautiful autograph letter in which the famous singer thanks her correspondent and confirms an appointment: “Dear Sir, There has been a mistake. I would like to reserve the box for tomorrow evening, Wednesday. Thank you in advance for making the arrangements today. Best regards. A. Verlet.” An additional note in the left margin appears to clarify the details of this request. Alice Verlet was a coloratura soprano who was particularly acclaimed in the early 20th century. Born Alice Vander Heyde in Belgium, she pursued an international career, notably at the Paris Opera, the Opéra-Comique, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Renowned for the agility of her voice and her virtuosity in coloratura roles, she was also a lyric soprano who recorded for the radio. This correspondence, regarding a box reservation for a performance, offers a glimpse into the singer’s social and theatrical life. Paper with a gold monogram, a few creases, and slight signs of handling. Small tear at the margin. The item is in good condition overall.
