VARNAY (Astrid) (1918–2006). American opera singer of Swedish origin, a dramatic soprano, particularly famous for her interpretations of the Wagnerian repertoire. Original black-and-white photograph with an autograph dedication signed “Astrid Varnay.” 1958. 10.5 × 14 cm. A beautiful photographic portrait of the famous opera singer, shown in a three-quarter-front bust shot, wearing a set of jewelry. The photograph bears, in blue ink, a signed autograph dedication that is partially faded: “To Ginette, … with thanks. Astrid Varnay.” On the reverse, a large autograph signature “Astrid Varnay,” accompanied by the date “1958.” Astrid Varnay was one of the great dramatic sopranos of the 20th century. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1941 and quickly established herself as a leading interpreter of Wagner and Richard Strauss. She particularly distinguished herself in the roles of Brünnhilde, Isolde, Kundry, and Elektra, and was a regular participant at the Bayreuth Festival. An interesting artifact from the career of this great Wagnerian performer, notable for featuring a dedication on the front and a second signature on the back. The photograph shows some signs of handling, a horizontal crease in the lower portion, minor surface imperfections, and traces of old metal fasteners. The dedication on the front is partially faded. Overall, the item is in satisfactory condition.
