SÉGOFFIN (Victor) (1867–1925). French sculptor. Winner of the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1897. Student of Jules Cavelier and Louis-Ernest Barrias. Autograph letter. “Ségoffin” to a lady [Madame Roll, wife of the painter Alfred Roll]. No place, no date [Paris, circa 1911]. 3 pages, in-8 format, on letterhead from 17 Rue de La Rochefoucauld. An interesting letter concerning the selection of marble for the creation of a sculpture and the completion of the artist’s work. Ségoffin warmly thanks his correspondent for her decision and is delighted to be able to continue his work under favorable conditions: “I am delighted with your decision and hope you will not regret the choice of marble, for I am convinced that this material will highlight certain details and complement my work. ” He specifies his intention to continue working on the sculpture: “I will begin the refinement process immediately.” He also expresses his gratitude for the encouragement he has received and mentions the compliments from those around him, particularly those from Mr. Roll, which he considers especially valuable. This correspondence is of interest to the history of sculpture, as it documents the choice of materials, the refinement process, and the relationship between the artist and his patrons. A few annotations in the margins; handwritten postscript. Some old creases; in good overall condition.
