SASSE (Marie) (1838–1907). Famous Belgian opera singer. Signed autograph letter regarding her performance in *La Fille du régiment*. Paris, July 10, 1904. 1 page, in-8 format, in black ink, on folded paper. An interesting autograph letter signed “Marie Sasse,” addressed to an unidentified correspondent, in which the famous soprano discusses her performance of Donizetti’s *La Fille du régiment*, particularly in Baden-Baden. “I did indeed sing *La Fille du Régiment* in Baden-Baden in French, and in Cairo in Italian.” The singer notes that she is particularly pleased to be able to provide this information: “I am delighted to give you this very precise information and send you my best regards.” Marie Sasse, also known as Marie Sass, was one of the great dramatic sopranos of the 19th century. She distinguished herself particularly at the Paris Opera, where she took part in several major premieres of the French operatic repertoire, notably Meyerbeer’s *L’Africaine* (1865) and Verdi’s *Don Carlos* (1867). This letter offers an interesting insight into her international career and the practice of performing operas in different languages in the late 19th century. Some creases and slight signs of wear. Beautiful handwriting, perfectly legible.
