LANSKOY (André). (1902–1976). French painter of Russian origin, a leading figure in lyrical abstraction. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED “Lanskoy” TO GÉRARD LEMAN. No place, July 14, 1972. 1 folio-sized page, in black ink. Envelope preserved, addressed to Gérard Leman in Tourcoing, with a stamp and postmark dated July 14, 1972. An amusing letter in which André Lanskoy expresses his irritation at the idea that anyone might write about his work after his death. “No, nothing was done about me while I’m still alive, only to spout nonsense after my death. ” The painter then mentions the album dedicated to his work published by Hazan, which is now out of print, though a few copies remain available in the provinces. “You’re probably familiar with the album published by Hazan; it’s out of print, but you can still find copies in the provinces. ” Finally, he promises his correspondent that he will send him the latest catalog of his exhibition. A personal and spontaneous account of Lanskoy’s perspective on his own legacy and the dissemination of his work during his lifetime. Letter accompanied by its original envelope. Traces of creases and slight signs of handling.
