LABLACHE (Luigi) (1794–1858). Famous Franco-Italian opera singer, one of the greatest basses of the 19th century. Signed autograph letter regarding an invitation to Versailles. No place, no date [19th century]. Autograph letter signed “Lablache,” 1 page, in-8 format, in brown ink on laid paper. A few old creases and slight signs of age. A cordial letter addressed to a lady in which the famous singer expresses his regret at being unable to accept an invitation to Versailles, as personal obligations compel him to postpone his visit. “I am sorry, Madam, that I cannot take advantage of your kindness today; some business matters are forcing me to go to Versailles, where I will remain until tomorrow. Please accept my apologies and my deepest regrets. ” He nevertheless promises to visit her as soon as possible: “Although I have a commitment every Saturday that is difficult for me to avoid, I will make every effort to come and pay you a visit. ” He concludes by recalling memories of his former hosts and renewing his respectful regards to his correspondent. Luigi Lablache (Naples, 1794–1858) was one of the most illustrious basses of his time. Admired for the exceptional power of his voice, its range, and his dramatic qualities, he triumphed on the great European opera stages, notably in Paris, London, Milan, and Vienna. A favored interpreter of the Italian repertoire, he was particularly appreciated in the works of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. This letter offers a glimpse into the singer’s social life; he was highly sought after in the aristocratic and artistic salons of his time, where his talents and personality earned him numerous invitations. A beautiful autograph letter, written and signed entirely by Luigi Lablache, reflecting his social connections.
