GOUVY (Louis-Théodore). 1819–1898. Born in Goffontaine, in the Saarland. A French composer of German origin, author of numerous symphonic and chamber music works. Autograph letter “Th. Gouvy” to “My dear Wehle.” No place, no date. 1 page, small 8vo, with a corner cut on the upper right affecting the text slightly. LETTER CONCERNING MUSICAL VARIATIONS AND THEIR PERFORMANCE. The composer offers his correspondent some recommendations regarding the performance of a work: “Here are the Variations I told you about. You would be very kind to take a look at them, so that tonight we can play them without stopping; you will be able to judge them better and let me know your opinion. ” This letter is particularly interesting for its musical content, revealing the composer’s concern to ensure his work is performed under the right conditions before seeking his correspondent’s assessment. Louis-Théodore Gouvy occupied a unique place in 19th-century musical life, bridging French and German traditions. His body of work, primarily instrumental, includes nine symphonies and numerous chamber music compositions. Missing the upper right corner; creases from handling; and slight foxing.
