GOUNOD (Charles) (1818–1893). French composer, best known for his operas *Faust* and *Romeo and Juliet* and his extensive body of religious music. Autograph manuscript of philosophical and religious reflections. Undated [19th century]. 3 autograph folios of varying sizes, written in brown ink and pencil, with numerous corrections and cross-outs. Interesting autograph fragments devoted to religious questions, human nature, and the relationship between faith and reason. Gounod offers several reflections on the foundations of Christianity, confession, communion, and the place of religion in society. In particular, he explores the nature of sin, human responsibility, and the relationship between religious precepts and moral principles. One of the fragments explores the relationship between the Catholic faith, Roman society, and political power through a reflection on confession and communion. Another addresses the question of imagination, intelligence, and the relationship between thought and reality. A collection of working notes containing numerous revisions, deletions, and additions, reflecting the gradual development of the composer’s philosophical and religious thought. Included is an old folder labeled “Autographs and Manuscripts” and a printed note regarding a manuscript by Gounod titled *Dieu et l’homme* (*God and Man*), from which these fragments may have originated, though this connection cannot be established with certainty. A few creases, foxing, and small marginal tears.
