GOUNOD (Charles) (1818–1893). French composer, best known for the operas *Faust* and *Romeo and Juliet*. Autograph manuscript containing philosophical and religious reflections on human nature, Christianity, the body, and the mind. Undated [19th century]. 2 pages, large quarto, in brown ink, extensively corrected, with numerous cross-outs, deletions, additions, and revisions. An interesting working manuscript exploring the relationship between humanity, religion, and spirituality. Gounod reflects on human nature, examining in particular the relationship between body and mind, perception, intelligence, reason, and faith. He examines the concepts of freedom, responsibility, and conscience, then addresses the role of Christianity in the moral and spiritual formation of humankind. “Understanding is a faculty of our mind, by means of which we perceive the ideas of two worlds. ” The composer pays particular attention to distinguishing the various intellectual faculties of humankind, discussing imagination, perception, and reason, before exploring the relationship between material and spiritual existence. He also addresses questions of the absolute, God, and the infinite, seeking to define the true nature of man. “Is not the vital center where reason and will, and intelligence with the body, converge—in other words, the seat of man, the self—what we call the heart? ” This document is particularly revealing of Charles Gounod’s intellectual and religious concerns, whose spirituality deeply permeated his musical work. The numerous corrections, revisions, and crossed-out passages give this manuscript the character of a particularly interesting work in progress, bearing witness to the gradual development of his thought. Unsigned and undated manuscript; attribution to Gounod to be confirmed by comparative handwriting analysis. Old creases, minor signs of handling, and marginal stains.
