GOLSCHMANN (Vladimir) (1893–1972). French conductor of Russian origin. Music director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1931 to 1958. Typed letter signed “V. Golschmann” to Victor Labunski. St. Louis (Missouri), November 23, 1943. 1 page, quarto size, on illustrated letterhead of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. An interesting letter concerning the programming of a symphony by Victor Labunski and the financial difficulties faced by American orchestras during World War II. Golschmann suggests to his correspondent that he come to St. Louis to conduct part of his own symphony on January 8 and 9: “Would you, in principle, be available on January 8 and 9? It is quite possible that we may ask you to come and conduct part of your symphony.” However, he candidly explains the orchestra’s budgetary constraints, noting that he has no budget for this invitation and is only considering a stipend of $50 to cover travel expenses. The conductor also asked Labunski to provide the durations of the Andante and Finale movements so that he could consider including them in a program lasting approximately twenty minutes. This letter offers insight into the relationships between composers and conductors in the United States during the war, as well as Golschmann’s efforts to promote contemporary music. Signs of age.
