GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895). French composer and conductor, best known for the operas *Jocelyn* and *La Vivandière*. Autograph letter signed “Benjamin Godard” to Louis Gallet. Paris, August 3, 1882. 4 pages, in-8. An interesting letter concerning the composer’s difficult relationship with his publisher Grus and the conditions under which his musical works were distributed. Godard recounts meeting the elderly publisher Grus, but failing to convince him to fully support his projects. In particular, he describes the publisher’s reaction to the success of his piece *Noël*: “I saw Grus yesterday; I sang ‘Noël’ for him, hoping to entice him with this piece, which makes a great impression on everyone who hears it.” But the reception proved disappointing. The publisher criticized him, in particular, for not having purchased a score and displayed great commercial caution. Godard is outraged by this attitude and asks Louis Gallet to intervene to convince Grus: “He seemed very surprised that you could sell your poem (...) he thinks you should be content with the royalties (...) in short, he’s rambling. ” The composer advises his correspondent to meet with the publisher directly to defend their shared interests and secure more favorable terms: “If he doesn’t accept them, tell him to take a hike—because he really is a bit too shrewd. ” This correspondence reveals the economic and publishing difficulties faced by French composers in the late 19th century, as well as the relationship between Benjamin Godard, his librettist Louis Gallet, and their publisher. A few old creases and slight signs of wear.
