DUBRAY (Vital-Gabriel, known as Vital Dubray) (1813–1892). French sculptor, a student of Jules Ramey. Creator of numerous statues and monumental works, notably the “Neptune” group, now in Paris. Autograph letter: “ Dubray Vital” to “My dear Mr. Tardieu.” No place, August 9, 1859. 3 pages, in-8, on blue paper. An interesting letter in which the sculptor discusses plans for a meeting in Passy, his personal relationships, and several artistic matters. Dubray informs his correspondent: “I am currently residing in Passy, at 23 Rue de Boulainvilliers.” He explains that an unforeseen circumstance, related to his obligations, prevents him from visiting his correspondent, and apologizes for this setback. He also discusses various personal relationships and matters before turning to his artistic pursuits and the matter of a monument, for which he appears to have been commissioned. In particular, he mentions exchanges regarding a statue and alludes to difficulties encountered in the execution or organization of certain projects. The letter concludes with a proposal to meet, as the sculptor expresses a desire to see his correspondent again and continue their conversation. This excerpt from Vital Dubray’s private correspondence sheds light on the relationships maintained by artists during the Second Empire and their professional concerns.
