DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to a friend [Maurice Emmanuel, according to the attached card]. No place, May 30, 1917. 1½ pages, oblong in-12 format. An interesting letter regarding a musical gathering and the performance of a composition by the recipient. “Tomorrow at 4:30 p.m., there is a musical gathering at Bazelaire’s (rue de la Pompe) during which he will premiere, with Bilsang, a short canon for V[…], and cello, which I will accompany. I’ll ask Bazelaire to let me in right at the beginning, if he can, in which case I might be able to take a car and still arrive in time to hear your *Prométhée*, which I’d be very interested in. But if you don’t see me, it won’t be my fault! ” This letter provides insight into the Parisian music scene during World War I and the relationship between Théodore Dubois and Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), a composer and musicologist who was a former student at the Conservatoire. It also mentions the cellist Paul Bazelaire (1886–1958) and a private recital held at Bazelaire’s home on Rue de la Pompe, as well as *Prométhée*, a work by the letter’s author. Théodore Dubois served as choirmaster at Sainte-Clotilde and then at La Madeleine before succeeding Camille Saint-Saëns at the main organ. As a professor of composition and director of the Conservatory, he played a significant role in French musical life.
