DELMAS (Jean-François, known as Francisque) (1861–1933). French opera singer, bass-baritone. Autographed calling card addressed to a friend, with thanks and an expression of affection. Visiting card printed in the name of “Francisque Delmas, of the Opera,” bearing several handwritten lines in blue ink, signed with the initials “F. D.” On the reverse, a handwritten note indicating the recipient: “Mr. Labarthe, 26, Ministry of the Colonies.” On his personal card, the famous singer warmly thanks a friend for his kindness and thoughtfulness: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart, my old friend, for your kindness; I am deeply touched and very happy! A warm and sincere handshake.” In a postscript, he adds his respectful regards to Madame [Caire, reading uncertain]. Francisque Delmas (Lyon, 1861–1933), one of the great bass voices of the Paris Opera during the Belle Époque, distinguished herself particularly in works by Wagner, Massenet, and the great operas of the French repertoire. His powerful voice, diction, and dramatic talents earned him a brilliant career on France’s premier opera stage. This card attests to the singer’s warm and grateful nature and his personal relationships outside the theatrical world. It is also notable for being written on a business card bearing his name, which explicitly states his status as an artist of the Opera. A lovely autographed card with an affectionate message, characteristic of the private correspondence of a great performer of the Belle Époque. Good overall condition. A few slight signs of handling and small, old marks.
