D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, a student of César Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Autograph letter signed “Vincent d’Indy,” addressed to Narcisse Brument, conductor and librettist. Paris, May 25, 1896. 1½ pages, in-8 format, in black ink, on a double sheet. A lovely thank-you letter regarding the performance of one of his symphonies at a popular music festival. Vincent d'Indy expresses his deep gratitude to his correspondent for the invitation and for his orchestra’s participation in the performance of his work: “Let me thank you, and your excellent orchestra, for the great pleasure I derived from the performance of my Symphony at last Saturday’s popular festival.” He particularly highlights the musicians’ qualities and their artistic commitment, despite the difficulties of such a performance: “Please believe that I am very grateful to you for having, despite your demanding daily work, afforded me such a delight, and to the musicians of your orchestra for the care and talent they demonstrated in this performance, which fully satisfied me. ” He concludes by reiterating his thanks and warm regards to Narcisse Brument. An interesting account of the dissemination of French symphonic music in the late 19th century and of the relationship between Vincent d’Indy and the conductors of his time. Some old creases, small marginal perforations, and slight signs of handling.
