CHARPENTIER (Gustave) (1860–1956). French composer, student of Jules Massenet, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1887, composer of the opera *Louise*, which premiered in 1900. Autograph letter signed “G. Charpentier,” addressed to a friend. [Paris], 24 rue André-del-Sarte, undated. 1 page, in-8 format, in black ink, with an autograph addition in the margin. An interesting letter concerning the composer’s journalistic activities and his collaboration with the magazine *La Critique*. Charpentier informs his correspondent of a change of address and asks him to intervene with the magazine’s editor to secure the collaboration of several illustrators: “Your snapshot will be sent to you within a few days […] The copy for the 25th is possible—to save me postage costs, would you be so kind as to ask Bans if any of his illustrator collaborators might be willing to contribute a sketch to our journal. ” He notes that he has already approached several artists, notably Jean de Caland, Jossot, and d’Espagnat, but regrets that they are unable to participate due to prior commitments. In the margin, the composer adds an invitation to come meet him at his home to discuss, among other things, a short fantasia intended for publication. An interesting document on Gustave Charpentier’s activities outside of musical composition, attesting to his involvement in the arts press and his relationships with the draftsmen and illustrators of his time. A few creases and slight signs of handling. In good overall condition.
