CHARLES-RENÉ (Charles Olivier René Bibard, known as) (1863–1935). French pianist, composer, and teacher. Winner of the first Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1884; student of Léo Delibes and Antoine Marmontel. Autograph telegram card signed “Charles René,” addressed to Mr. Georges Flouest. Paris, September 1895; exact date of postmark to be confirmed. 1 page, in-12 format, in black ink, on a telegram card issued by the French Post and Telegraph Administration, franked with a 30-centime stamp, with postmarks and distribution marks. An amusing exchange in which the composer discusses his relationship with his student, Madame Flouest, and offers to give her a music lesson at her home, while also sharing updates on his artistic activities. Charles-René writes to Georges Flouest to thank him for his reply and expresses his desire to continue his lessons with Madame Flouest, despite the constraints caused by the holidays: “I would hate to inconvenience Madame Flouest, and I’ll be happy to go give her her lesson on Rue Daunou at 4 p.m.” He reassures his correspondent about the necessary trip: “Don’t feel bad about the trip this will require of me: I’m working very diligently at the moment, and it’s an excellent excuse to get out!” The composer ends his letter with a friendly and respectful closing. This telegram card offers a glimpse into the daily life of a Parisian music teacher in the late 19th century, illustrating the personal relationships he maintained with his students and their families. Charles-René, whose real name was Charles Olivier René Bibard, studied at the Paris Conservatory and won the First Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1884 for *L’Enfant prodigue*, based on a libretto by Édouard Guinand. He went on to pursue a career as a composer and teacher of piano and music theory. Among his students was the young Maurice Ravel. Condition: Showing signs of use. Old creases, yellowed paper, small stains, and signs of handling. Postage and postmarks preserved. Autograph handwriting is clearly legible.
