CHARLES-RENÉ (Charles Olivier René Bibard, known as) (1863–1935). French pianist, composer, and teacher. Winner of the first Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1884 for *L'Enfant prodigue*, based on a libretto by Édouard Guinand. Autograph telegram card signed “Charles-René,” addressed to Mr. Georges Flouest. Paris, October 17, 1895. 1 page, in-12 format, in black ink, on a telegram card issued by the French Post and Telegraph Administration, franked at 50 centimes, with postmarks. Additional text in the right margin. A charming, friendly exchange in which the composer recounts a visit to Georges Flouest’s home and humorously describes the social conventions of his circle. Charles-René explains to his correspondent that he prefers to postpone their meeting in order to avoid an awkward situation involving a mutual acquaintance: “Upon waking up (this morning—not at this hour, mind you), I thought that, all things considered, it would be better to postpone your visit until the next ‘Patte Blanche’ gathering (Thursday, the 31st). ” He then refers with a touch of mischief to Madame Girard’s formal requirements: “I’m still on somewhat formal terms with Mrs. Girard; I think she’s quite a stickler for formality (just between us), and she might find me a bit too casual for daring to extend invitations without letting her know—or by letting her know at the last minute. ” He nevertheless reassures his friend that a future meeting is possible, hoping to have the time necessary to observe all the proper courtesies. This telegram card serves as a vivid testament to social relations and high-society customs in Parisian musical circles at the end of the 19th century. Charles-René, whose real name was Charles Olivier René Bibard, studied at the Paris Conservatory, notably under Léo Delibes and Antoine Marmontel. In 1884, he won the First Second Grand Prix de Rome. A composer and educator, he pursued a career devoted to teaching and musical composition. Condition: Showing signs of use. Slightly yellowed paper, small old creases, a few stains and signs of handling, corners and edges slightly worn. 50-centime stamp and postmarks preserved. Handwriting and signature legible.
