BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. A friend and collaborator of Émile Zola, he was one of the leading figures of musical naturalism. His notable compositions include *Le Rêve*, *L’Attaque du moulin*, *Messidor*, and *L’Ouragan*. Autograph letter signed “Alfred Bruneau” to a friend, likely Louis Gallet. Paris, undated (circa 1893). 1 page, large quarto, on graph paper bearing the letterhead of the music publishing house Choudens Fils, 30 Boulevard des Capucines. A very interesting letter concerning the preparations for the premiere of his opera *L'Attaque du moulin*, based on Émile Zola, and the casting of roles at the Opéra-Comique. Bruneau discusses the auditions and the difficulties encountered in putting together the cast. He is particularly critical of the vocal qualities of several prospective performers: “Yesterday’s audition did not yield what we had hoped for. The young woman in question was exactly the type for Angélique, but her voice was too weak. ” He reports on the decisions made regarding the various roles, notably Angélique, Hubert, Félicien, and Jean, citing several singers from the Opéra-Comique, including Mlle Baucaire, Mlle Montalba, Engel, and Chœs. “Vasdhout states that the premiere will be on October 15 and that our performance will follow three weeks later. ” The composer also recounts his exchanges with the Opéra-Comique management and his concerns regarding the preparation timeline, noting that the chorus is rehearsing and that workers are in the auditorium. He concludes his letter by expressing regret over his correspondent’s absence: “The mail is pressing, and I can only tell you how much I regret your absence during these delicate moments. I’m working like a horse.” A valuable account of life behind the scenes at the Opéra-Comique and the artistic and logistical challenges preceding the premiere of a major work of musical naturalism. *L’Attaque du moulin*, with a libretto by Louis Gallet based on a short story by Émile Zola, premiered at the Opéra-Comique on November 23, 1893. The letter most likely refers to the preparations for this premiere. Paper is slightly yellowed, with a few small stains and crease marks. In good overall condition.
